College denies Dhoni not Promoted to second year

The college in which Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is studying as an under-graduate has refuted reports that he has been denied promotion to second year after failing to appear in second semester examinations.

Dhoni, who is pursuing his graduation degree from St Xavier's college in the city, failed to appear in second semester examination held May-June, as he was not in the country and it was reported he had been denied promotion to the third semester.

'Promotion can be denied to a student after he or she appears in an examination. When Dhoni did not appear in the examination at all, then the question of denying promotion is ruled out,' a member of the college administration told IANS.

Meanwhile, the college principal, Father Nicolas Tete said: 'Special arrangements have been made for Dhoni (to take the exam). It is up to Dhoni to decide when and where he wants to appear in the examination.'

Dhoni was admitted in the St Xavier's college under sports quota and he was exempted from attending classes. He has passed the first semester, taking the examination from his Ranchi home.

To graduate from St Xavier's College, Dhoni will have to clear six semesters in five years. Normally, a student has to clear six semesters in three years to get the degree. However, if they fail to clear any of the semester examinations, they will be given a maximum period of five years to clear all.

India:Rape case registered against five Delhi policemen

A rape case was registered against the Station House Officer and four others as the medical report of the victim confirmed the act.

"We have registered a case of gangrape against the five policemen after recording the statement of the victim," Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.

Sources in the police said a test identification parade would be conducted to identify the four personnel of the force.

The police, which handed over the investigation to the Delhi crime branch, shifted Station House Officer Pradeep Kumar to Police Lines to ensure "free and fair probe".

A woman on Tuesday claimed she was raped by the police men in a police station in south-west Delhi, triggering protests with scores of people pelting stones at the building.

The crime branch, which was handed over the investigation, registered the case under IPC section 376 and took the statement from the victim.

"She was appearing on various channels but was avoiding the crime branch. She has reported to the crime branch officials just now (10pm) and her statement is being recorded," a senior official said.

The woman, who resides in a slum in Inderpuri, had alleged that she was taken to the Inderpuri police station last night to enquire about her husband, who was allegedly involved in betting cases.

She claimed that she was sexually assaulted by the SHO and four others who later threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.

After she was let off, the woman said in a police complaint, she informed her husband who took her to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. The husband said the hospital authorities asked him to inform police.

However, Delhi Police said that the preliminary medical examination report of the woman, who alleged that she was sexually assaulted by five policemen, suggested that she was not raped.

"We have received the preliminary medical examination report. It says that there is no injury mark on the body of the victim," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

However, he said, the vaginal swab has been preserved and will be sent to the Forensic Laboratory in Rohini for further tests.

"We are still awaiting the final report as the report from the forensic experts is needed to finalize the medical report," he said.

SHO Pradeep Kumar had taken charge of the station on May 24 only and he had "mounted pressure on criminal elements in the area", the official claimed and alleged that this could be the reason for the woman's allegations.

India:Bus falls from flyover in Delhi; 2 dead

New Delhi, June 24: Atleast two passengers were reportedly dead and several injured when a private chartered bus plying on Nehru Place-Dilshad garden route fell from Pandav Nagar flyover on Wednesday evening.

The dead include the driver of the bus. Several commuters have been reported injured.

The accident took place when a child suddenly came in front of the bus. The driver trying to avoid the collision lost control of the bus and it fell from the flyover.
